Cover letters · 8 min read

A cover letter builder should save you the blank page without making every letter sound the same. These are eight tools that write or format cover letters, what each gives you for free, what they cost as of 3 November 2026, and who each suits. Disclosure: we make Kaizen, one of the tools in this article. We do not earn commission from any tool listed here, and none of them paid to be included. We have not ranked Kaizen first or last; the tools are grouped by who they suit.

The short answer

For free: Rezi lets free users create unlimited cover letters, Reactive Resume includes cover letters at no cost, and Kickresume’s free plan has four matching cover letter templates with unlimited downloads. For AI drafting without limits, Teal+ and Huntr Pro list unlimited AI cover letters. For a letter you shape in conversation and keep matched to your resume, Kaizen. Whichever you choose, edit the draft: recruiters can tell a generic letter within a sentence. Our 4-paragraph template shows what a letter needs.

How we compared them

What we did: on 3 November 2026 we read each tool's own pricing page, plus its product pages where a claim needed them, and wrote down plans, prices, free-plan limits and features exactly as published. Kaizen's figures come from our own product code.

What we did not do: we did not run a hands-on test of every competitor for this update, so we do not rate output quality, template design or support, and we do not give scores. Where a line comes from a page we could not read today, we say so or leave it out.

Prices are in the currency each page showed us and change often, and some tools show different prices by country. Check the tool's own page before you pay. If you spot something out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

  • Free: can you create and download a letter without paying?
  • AI: does the tool draft or edit the letter, and how is that limited?
  • Match: does the letter stay consistent with your resume?
  • Cost: every plan and billing period on the tool’s own pricing page.

Kaizen

Kaizen builds the cover letter beside your resume and the job posting. Attach the posting in the coach chat, ask for a letter, and the coach drafts it and proposes edits you apply or skip. There are 11 cover letter templates with selectable text, and the interface is in English and Danish.

Free plan: unlimited drafts, 5 of 14 resume templates and 5 of 11 cover letter templates, live ATS score, the application tracker, one résumé PDF, a small monthly AI allowance. Drafting a letter draws on the small monthly AI allowance. Pro adds all templates, PDF and Word export and a larger allowance. Pro $24.95 a month, $49.95 a quarter or $119.95 a year, excluding VAT.

Trade-offs: no browser extension, and only one résumé PDF is free, so PDFs of other documents need Pro. See Kaizen pricing.

How to choose

  • Writing one or two letters: a free plan is enough. Rezi, Kickresume, Reactive Resume or Kaizen.
  • Applying to dozens of roles: unlimited AI drafting (Teal+, Huntr Pro) saves time, but the drafts need editing each time.
  • Want the letter to echo your resume and the posting: use a tool where the posting is an input, such as Kaizen or Jobscan.
  • Be careful with four-weekly trials (Zety, Resume.io): note the renewal date.

Before you send, run the letter through the free cover letter checker, and read how to mirror a job description without keyword stuffing. Need a layout first? See the cover letter templates and cover letter examples by role, including career change and registered nurse.
