UAE CV format and cover letter: what employers expect

For internationals applying to employers in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates, especially from abroad. You will leave knowing which personal details to include, how to present an attested degree and a visa status, and how to write a cover letter a Gulf recruiter reads to the end.

A strong UAE CV is a clear, reverse-chronological document of one to two pages showing your title, results and what a sponsor needs: your location, visa status and notice period. A photo, nationality and date of birth are optional, and the Labour Law bans discrimination on grounds such as national origin. Add a short, tailored cover letter.

What does a UAE CV look like?

There is no official UAE CV format, and UAE employers hire from many countries, so clarity beats any regional template. Use reverse-chronological order, one to two pages, a plain layout that portals and applicant-tracking software can parse, and a PDF unless the posting asks otherwise.

  • Header: name, target title, city and country, visa status, notice period, phone with country code, email and LinkedIn.
  • Summary: three or four lines with your title, years of experience, sector and one or two results. Mirror the posting’s words.
  • Experience: newest first, with a line on what each employer does and how big it is, then three to five results-led bullets.
  • Education and certifications, with attestation and licence status where relevant.
  • Skills and languages, with honest levels.

u.ae’s own advice to job seekers starts with “an impressive cover letter and an honest CV”. Honesty matters more here than almost anywhere: for skilled roles, MOHRE’s classification relies on an attested certificate, so your degree is checked as part of the hiring process.

Should you include a photo, nationality and date of birth?

Many CV templates aimed at the Gulf include a photo, nationality, date of birth and marital status. No official guidance requires any of them, and the UAE Labour Law prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender, race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability. Include what helps your case and leave out what doesn’t.

  • Photo: optional. If you use one, make it a recent, professional head-and-shoulders shot. Your experience should do the persuading, not the picture.
  • Nationality: include it when it answers an employer’s question, for example if you are a GCC national, who doesn’t need a residence visa, or if the posting asks.
  • Date of birth, marital status and religion: leave them off unless an application form asks.
  • Passport number and copies of documents: never on a CV. Send them only to a verified employer after you have checked the offer, because fraudsters collect them.

How do you show your visa status and availability?

The first practical question a UAE recruiter asks is what it takes to hire you: whether they must sponsor you and when you can start. Answer it in the header, in one line.

  • “Based in Pune, India · Requires employment visa · Notice period 60 days”
  • “Dubai, UAE · Job-seeker visa valid until 30 November 2026 · Available immediately”
  • “Abu Dhabi, UAE · Spouse-sponsored residence visa · Available in 2 weeks”

If you are already in the UAE on a family visa, say so: the employer can hire you on a work permit for a resident on family sponsorship without sponsoring your residence. UAE notice periods run from 30 to 90 days, so a hiring manager will plan around yours. Don’t write that you are available immediately if you are not.

How should you present qualifications and licences?

List the degree exactly as it appears on the certificate, with the institution, country and year. Certain jobs, and the job-seeker visa, require an attested certificate, so once yours is done add “attested (foreign ministry and UAE embassy)”. It tells an employer the paperwork won’t delay your start.

Your job title matters beyond the CV. MOHRE classifies jobs into professional levels, and levels 1–3 (managers, professionals and technicians) open the Green visa and job-seeker visa. Use the title that honestly describes your work: “Mechanical Engineer” and “Mechanical Technician” land in different levels.

Doctors, lab technicians and some other health professionals must pass a licensing exam with the Ministry of Health and Prevention, the Dubai Health Authority or the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi before they can work. Put your licence status on page one, including an exam you have booked. Our qualification recognition guide covers the general approach.

How do you write experience for a UAE recruiter?

A recruiter in Dubai may not know your former employer, your city or your currency. Give each role one line of context (sector, size, market) and write bullets as action, scope and result. Convert money into AED or US dollars so the reader doesn’t have to.

Tailor every CV to the posting. Pull the three requirements it stresses most and make sure your top bullets prove them, in its words. Our guide to mirroring job-description keywords shows how without keyword stuffing, and our free resume checker flags weak bullets in a minute.

For: No Arabic

How should you list Arabic and English?

List every language with an honest level, ideally on the CEFR scale (A1 to C2): “English C1 (IELTS 7.5) · Arabic A2, spoken”. u.ae’s job-search tips call Arabic, at least spoken, an advantage, so even basic conversational Arabic is worth listing. Job offers and contracts are issued in Arabic and English, and you can ask for a third language such as Hindi, Urdu, Tamil or Malayalam from MOHRE’s list of nine. For roles where English is the working language, see English-speaking jobs abroad.

What should a UAE cover letter say?

Keep it to three short paragraphs, under a page, addressed to a named person where you can find one. When you apply by email, the email body is your cover letter; don’t leave it at “Please find my CV attached”.

  • Opening: the role, and one specific reason you want this employer (a project, a market, a service line).
  • Proof: one or two results that match the posting’s top requirements, with numbers.
  • Close: your visa status, notice period and when you could relocate, and a request for a call.

Salary: u.ae advises job seekers to be realistic about their earning potential. If a form asks for expected salary, give a researched range and say whether it is basic salary or total package; UAE gratuity is calculated on basic salary only. The 2026 cover letter template gives you a structure to start from.

What must never go on your CV?

Anything you cannot prove. Adopting a false identity or submitting forged documents or certificates lets an employer terminate you without notice under Article 44 of the Labour Law, and certificates for skilled roles are attested during hiring. Inflated titles and invented qualifications are found out.

Also leave off salary history you haven’t been asked for, reasons for leaving, and personal details such as religion or health. And if anyone offers to “place” your CV with UAE employers for a fee, walk away: charging job seekers recruitment fees is illegal in the UAE.

Before and after

  • Personal details block → UAE CV header

Before: Name: Rahul Menon / Male, 34, Married / Religion: Hindu / Passport No. K1234567 / Objective: To obtain a challenging position in a reputed organisation

After: Rahul Menon — Senior Quantity Surveyor, 9 years (UK and India, commercial and hospitality projects) / Kochi, India · Requires employment visa · Notice period 60 days / +91 98XXX XXXXX · rahul.menon@email.com · linkedin.com/in/rahulmenon

The rewrite drops details an employer may not lawfully use and a passport number no CV needs, and replaces them with title, experience, visa status and notice period, the facts a UAE recruiter screens on first.

  • Unknown employer → bullet with context and result

Before: Worked at Sharma Constructions. Responsible for cost control on projects.

After: Sharma Constructions (mid-size contractor, 600 staff, Mumbai): Managed cost control for a 42-storey residential tower worth INR 3.1 billion (about AED 136 million); held final account variance to 1.8% against a 5% allowance.

A recruiter in Dubai doesn’t know the company or think in rupees; the context line and AED conversion make the scale of the job instantly clear.

  • Generic summary → targeted UAE summary

Before: Hardworking and dynamic professional with excellent communication skills seeking a suitable opportunity in the UAE.

After: Registered nurse (BSc, 7 years in adult ICU) with a DHA licence exam booked for October 2026. Led a 12-bed unit’s sepsis bundle rollout that cut time-to-antibiotics from 3 hours to 55 minutes. Seeking an ICU role in Dubai.

It names the profession, seniority, licence status and a measurable result, which is what a healthcare recruiter needs to shortlist a candidate who has to be licensed locally.

  • Email application → cover letter in the email body

Before: Dear Sir/Madam, Please find attached my CV for your kind consideration. Regards.

After: Dear Ms Al Hashimi, I am applying for the Supply Chain Analyst role at your Jebel Ali hub. At a Singapore 3PL I rebuilt the slotting model for 14,000 SKUs and cut pick times by 22%, which matches the warehouse-optimisation focus in your posting. I am on a job-seeker visa in Dubai until 30 November and can start immediately. Could we speak this week?

It uses the manager’s name, proves the posting’s main requirement with a number, and answers the visa and availability questions before they are asked.

Questions people ask

It is optional. No UAE rule requires a photo, and it is not a qualification. If you include one, use a recent, professional head-and-shoulders photo with a plain background. What gets you shortlisted is the top third of the first page: your title, years of experience, visa status and one or two results that match the posting.

No. The UAE Labour Law prohibits discrimination on grounds including national origin, and nationality is not a qualification. Include it when it answers a real question, for example if you are a GCC national and need no residence visa, or if the application form asks. Always include your visa status and notice period, which employers need to plan a hire.

One to two pages for most professionals: one page if you have under about ten years’ experience, two if you have more. There is no official UAE format. Recruiters screen quickly, so keep your title, visa status and strongest results on the first half of page one, and cut older roles to a single line each.

Send one whenever you can. u.ae’s job-search tips tell applicants to start with an impressive cover letter and an honest CV. Keep it to three short paragraphs: why this role and employer, one or two results that match the posting, and your visa status, notice period and availability. For email applications, write it in the email body.

Not to apply, but certain jobs and the job-seeker visa require an attested qualification certificate, and attestation depends on your home country’s foreign ministry and the UAE embassy there. Starting early avoids delaying an offer. Once it is done, mention “degree attested” on your CV so the employer knows the paperwork is ready.
